BELGRADE DESIGN WEEK 2013 IN THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART

BDW2013  OPENS THE DOORS OF THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART AFTER 6 YEARS

The opening of BDW DizajnPark, the Belgrade Design Week exclusive exhibitions based on this year’s theme: “Innovation2 “, will take place on Tuesday, 04 June, at 17 h at the Museum of Contemporary Art (Usce). A dozen exhibitions from around the world will be showcased and the visitors will have a rare opportunity to see a nearly forgotten space of an important Belgrade cultural institution of national importance, which has been closed down for reconstruction for the past six years: it will temporarily open its doors only for the five days of the DesignPark event. Entry is free during the exhibitions, from Tuesday until Sunday, and the exhibitions and professional workshops in the Museum are just one section of the festival which will last until 09 June.

Belgrade Design Week is the first major event to take place at the Museum of Contemporary Art since the building reconstruction started in 2008. The building is located in New Belgrade and it is one of the most interesting world-class examples of modern museum architecture design. It was declared a monument of culture in 1987. Since its foundation in 1965, MOCA has based its exhibition policy on promoting the most significant artists, periods, movements and tendencies of the Yugoslav, Serbian and international XX century art, and during the BDW event the visitors will have the opportunity to see cutting-edge exhibitions of world-renowned designers, organized especially for the five days of DizajnPark.
The famous exhibition: “The Greek Monsters” is created based on original illustrations by the Greek studio Beetroot for the book “The Misunderstood Monsters of Greek Mythology.” The exhibition showcases graffiti and sculptures which can be best experienced with the “augmented reality” technology. Dusan Reljin, the acclaimed Serbian photographer residing in New York who photographs the world’s biggest stars, will display his latest work titled 10/10, and Austrian designer Thomas Feichtner will allow the Serbian public a rare and precious behind-the-scenes glimpse into his design process. A new Swiss design star Adrien Rovero will display an installation of  “custom made” stools in the national colors of Serbia, and one of the world’s most influential modern illustrators, Ukrainian-Danish artist Sergei Sviatchenko, will show a personal, modern vision of life using special collages, over ten meters high, made especially for the central hall of the Museum.

A Czech studio Okolo will design museum magic room in a poetic experiment with the history of modern mirrors, and the best national designers will have the opportunity to demonstrate their creativity in an award-winning exhibition titled: Creative Space Serbia, sponsored by SIEPA. Finally, a Swiss -Polish innovator in the field of material manufacture, Oskar Zieta, brings to MOCA his FIDA steel-pumping technology, which he uses to produce chairs, bridges, even wind rotors, while Hungary will showcase its small national pavilion named: “The Current Present”.
