BDW OPENS THE DOORS OF THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART AFTER 6 YEARS

The opening of BDW DizajnPark, Belgrade Design Week’s exclusive exhibitions based on this year’s theme “Innovation2“, will take place on Tuesday, 04 June, at 17h at the Museum of Contemporary Art, with a spectacular fashion show by Dragana Ognjenovic. A dozen exhibitions from around the world will be showcased and the visitors will have a rare opportunity to see a nearly forgotten space – an important Belgrade cultural institution of national importance – which has been closed down for reconstruction for the past six years: it will temporarily open its doors only for the five days of BDW.

Entry is free during the exhibitions, from Tuesday until Saturday from 10 – 20h. The exhibitions and professional workshops are just one section of the festival in the Museum.

Belgrade Design Week is the first major event to take place at the Museum of Contemporary Art since the building reconstruction started in 2008. The building is located in New Belgrade and it is one of the most interesting world-class examples of modernism museum architecture design. It was declared a monument of culture in 1987. Since its foundation in 1965, MOCA BELGRADE has based its exhibition policy on promoting the most significant artists, periods, movements
and tendencies of the Yugoslav, Serbian and international XX century art, and during the BDW event visitors will have the opportunity to see cutting-edge exhibitions of world-renowned designers, organised especially for the five days of BDW’s DizajnPark.
The famous exhibition: “The Greek Monsters” is created based on original illustrations by the Greek studio Beetroot for the book “The Misunderstood Monsters of Greek Mythology.” The exhibition showcases graffiti and sculptures which can be best experienced with the “augmented reality” technology. Dusan Reljin, the acclaimed Serbian photographer residing in New York who photographs the world’s biggest stars, will display his latest work titled 10/10, while the Austrian design superstar Thomas Feichtner will allow the Serbian public a rare and precious behind-the-scenes glimpse into his design process. The rising Swiss design star Adrien Rovero will display an installation of “custom made” stools in Serbian national colors, and one of the world’s most influential modern illustrators, Ukrainian-Danish artist Sergei Sviatchenko, will show a personal, modern vision of life, using a site specific installation made for the central hall of the Museum.
The German avant-garde studio KramWeisshaar will display a digital installation inspired by their spectacular research on high technology, and Serbian artist and designer Dejana Kabiljo, who lives and works in Vienna, will showcase her golden armchair installation premiered in Milan and made of YNA military scraps. The Czech curators Okolo will design the museum’s most magical room, a poetic experiment working with the history of contemporary mirrors, while the best crop of Serbian designers will have the opportunity to demonstrate their creativity in the award-winning exhibition titled Creative Space Serbia, produced by SIEPA. Finally, the famous Swiss -Polish innovator in the field of steel, Oskar Zieta, brings his FIDA technology to MOCA, which he uses to produce chairs, bridges, even wind rotors, while the most famous Serbian fashion designer Dragana Ognjenovic will showcase a unique display of her design concepts.
The Museum of Contemporary Art will open its doors to all visitors on 04 June, from 17h – 20h, for the BDW opening ceremony, attended by representatives of the government and cultural institutions, members of diplomatic corps, exhibitors and local, regional and global stars from a variety of creative industries – branding, design, architecture, publishing, advertising, fashion, new media, film, business and culture – as well as speakers at the BDW 2013 Conference
INNOVATION SQUARED which will take place at the same venue from 06 – 08 June.

It was a true pleasure to participate in Belgrade Design Week. BDW has great speakers and lots of creative energy and I was amazed by the commitment from the organization and their ability to create an international event of such caliber. Even with a small team, BDW sets a standard that other cities in the world can learn from. Actually, many design events would probably feel embarrassed if they visited Belgrade Design Week and compared themselves.
