AND THE WINNER IS DAAN ROOSEGAARDE!

One of the keynote speakers at Belgrade Design Week 2013, the Dutch designer was recently honored with INDEX Award 2013 + People’s Choice Award of CNN from the Crown Princess of Denmark for his interactive design.

This month Roosegaarde wins yet another award: the Blauwe Tulp Accenture Innovation Award in the category Health and Public Service Industry with his signature project: Smart Highway.

When he came to Belgrade to show his incredibly innovative Smart Highway and other projects which seem to have been teleported from another galaxy, we knew we were in the presence of an amazing talent. The impression was recently officially confirmed, when Daan Roosegaarde received the INDEX: Award 2013 in presence of the Crown Princess of Denmark and 2.000 guests from around 35 countries, and most recently, the Blauwe Tulp Accenture Innovation Award.

INDEX is the biggest design award in the world and it includes a prize of €100.000 and a touring exhibition. Roosegaarde also won the “People’s Choice Award”, being the favorite of the INDEX audience. The INDEX Award is the Oscar of the design prizes, aiming to improve life by engaging with design for sustainable solutions. The jury was excited about Roosegaarde’s interactive and sustainable landscapes such as Smart Highway; creating roads which generate their own light, communication and energy. This merge of technology and ideology is something Daan Roosegaarde calls ‘techno-poetry’. It is something that will change our future.

The Belgrade Design Week was the best design conference I have ever enjoyed – the specific spirit of the city in a kind of in between status, the rough tension which can still be felt ten years after the bombs, the pride and the looking for new orientation especially in the young generation – all this is giving the BDW a special flair far away from the current events of the global design circus. In addition the enthusiastic organizational team trying hardly but unsuccessfully to keep the program along the schedules, the informal exchange between the international speakers, the loss of any discipline, the parties on the river … what ever and how ever the interrelations between these aspects are working – it makes the BDW an unique, likeable, inspiring and productive event, I will never forget.
